The full cost breakdown most Shopify Plus pages won't give you

Enterprise Shopify is expensive.

Not because the platform fee is unreasonable — it starts at $2,300/month and that's published on Shopify's own pricing page. The real cost is everything around it. Apps, integrations, custom development, transaction fees. Those add up faster than most brands expect.

We've migrated over 30 stores to Shopify Plus from our base in Kuala Lumpur, across Malaysia, Singapore, and the wider ASEAN region. The platform fee is never the surprise. Everything else is.

Here's what Shopify Plus actually costs in 2026 — with real numbers.

What Is Shopify Plus and How Much Does It Cost?

The short answer is more than the sticker price.

Shopify Plus is Shopify's enterprise ecommerce plan, starting at $2,300/month or 0.25% of monthly revenue (whichever is higher). Total cost of ownership for most enterprise stores ranges from $3,500 to $12,000/month when factoring in apps, custom theme development, and third-party integrations, according to Shopify's published pricing and WebMedic's project data across 30+ migrations.

Shopify Plus is not a separate product. It's the top tier of the same Shopify platform, with features unlocked that the lower plans don't offer: checkout customization through Checkout Extensibility, up to 9 expansion stores, automation via Shopify Flow, exclusive APIs, and a dedicated merchant success manager.

The platform fee structure changed in 2023. Before that, Shopify Plus started at $2,000/month flat. Now it uses a variable model:

  • Standard term: $2,300/month for a 3-year commitment
  • Variable fee: 0.25% of monthly qualifying revenue (kicks in when your revenue exceeds the point where 0.25% surpasses $2,300)
  • Short-term contracts: Available but priced higher

That variable fee matters. A store doing $1.5 million/month in revenue would pay $3,750/month in platform fees alone — not $2,300.

How Does Shopify Plus Pricing Compare to Other Plans?

The jump from Advanced Shopify to Plus is steep — but so is the feature gap.

Shopify Plus costs roughly 7x more than Advanced Shopify ($2,300/month vs $299/month) but includes checkout customization, Shopify Flow automation, 9 expansion stores, lower credit card rates, and dedicated support. For stores doing over $800K/year, the lower transaction fees and included features often offset the price difference, based on Shopify's published rate cards.

Feature Basic Shopify Shopify Advanced Shopify Shopify Plus
Monthly price $39 $105 $399 $2,300+
Online credit card rate 2.9% + 30¢ 2.6% + 30¢ 2.4% + 30¢ Negotiable (as low as 2.15%)
Transaction fee (3rd party) 2.0% 1.0% 0.6% 0.2%
Staff accounts 2 5 15 Unlimited
Checkout customization No No No Yes
Shopify Flow No No Yes Yes
Expansion stores No No No Up to 9
Dedicated success manager No No No Yes
Custom API access Limited Limited Limited Full (Checkout, Functions)
B2B on Shopify No No No Yes

The credit card processing rate alone makes a difference at scale. A store processing $2M/year saves roughly $5,000–$15,000 annually on the rate reduction from Advanced to Plus. Add in the elimination of third-party transaction fees if you're using Shopify Payments, and the math starts working.

But platform fees are only part of the equation.

What Are the Hidden Costs of Shopify Plus?

This is where budgets break.

Hidden Shopify Plus costs typically add $1,200 to $10,000/month on top of the base platform fee. The biggest line items are third-party apps ($500–$3,000/month), custom theme development ($15,000–$50,000 one-time), and ERP/3PL integrations ($5,000–$25,000 one-time), based on WebMedic's project data across enterprise Shopify builds in ASEAN.

Apps and subscriptions

Shopify Plus stores run more apps than standard stores. Enterprise operations need enterprise tooling. Here's what we typically see on client stores:

App category Common tools Monthly cost
Email & SMS marketing Klaviyo, Postscript, Omnisend $300–$1,500
Loyalty & rewards Smile.io, LoyaltyLion, Yotpo $200–$800
Reviews & UGC Yotpo, Judge.me, Stamped $100–$500
Search & merchandising Searchspring, Algolia, Boost $200–$1,000
Subscriptions Recharge, Bold, Loop $100–$500
Analytics & attribution Triple Whale, Northbeam, Lifetimely $100–$500
Checkout upsells Zipify OCU, ReConvert, AfterSell $50–$200

Source: WebMedic client data, 2025–2026

A typical Shopify Plus store runs 15–25 paid apps. The median app spend we see across clients is $1,200/month.

Theme and design

Shopify Plus doesn't include a custom theme. You're starting with the same free themes available to every plan, or you're buying/building:

  • Premium theme (e.g., Prestige, Impulse): $350–$500 one-time
  • Custom Shopify theme from scratch: $15,000–$50,000
  • Ongoing theme maintenance and updates: $500–$2,000/month

Most brands at the Plus level need custom work. Off-the-shelf themes don't cut it when you're doing $1M+ in revenue and your brand identity matters.

Custom Shopify Plus theme design mockup on desktop and mobile

Integrations and custom development

Enterprise stores rarely run in isolation. They connect to ERPs, PIMs, 3PLs, CRMs, and custom middleware. Every integration costs money:

  • ERP integration (NetSuite, SAP, Microsoft Dynamics): $10,000–$50,000 setup + $500–$2,000/month maintenance
  • 3PL/fulfillment integration: $5,000–$15,000 setup
  • Custom Shopify app development: $10,000–$40,000
  • Checkout customization (Functions, Extensibility): $5,000–$20,000

These are the costs that blindside brands upgrading from Advanced Shopify. On lower plans, you work within constraints. On Plus, you're expected to build what you need — and building costs money.

What Does a Typical Shopify Plus Store Actually Pay Per Month?

Forget the $2,300 headline number. Here's what real stores pay.

A typical Shopify Plus store pays between $4,500 and $12,000/month in total operating costs. This includes the $2,300+ platform fee, $1,200 in app subscriptions, $500–$2,000 in ongoing development, and variable transaction fees. Stores doing over $2M/year in revenue trend toward the higher end due to revenue-based platform pricing, based on WebMedic's data from 30+ enterprise Shopify projects.

We'll break this into three store profiles:

Cost category Growth stage ($1M–$3M/yr) Mid-market ($3M–$10M/yr) Enterprise ($10M+/yr)
Shopify Plus platform $2,300 $2,300–$4,000 $4,000–$12,000+
Apps & subscriptions $800–$1,500 $1,500–$3,000 $3,000–$6,000
Ongoing development $500–$1,000 $1,000–$3,000 $3,000–$8,000
Transaction fees (Shopify Payments) ~2.15% of revenue ~2.15% of revenue Negotiated
Hosting & CDN Included Included Included
Total monthly (excl. transaction fees) $3,600–$4,800 $4,800–$10,000 $10,000–$26,000

Source: WebMedic project data, 2024–2026

One thing Shopify Plus does include that competitors charge for: hosting, SSL, CDN, and PCI compliance. On platforms like Magento or WooCommerce, those are separate line items that easily add $500–$2,000/month. Shopify absorbs that.

That's why the total-cost-of-ownership comparison often favors Shopify Plus even at $2,300/month — the things it includes would cost you more elsewhere.

Is Shopify Plus Worth It for Your Store?

Not every store needs Plus. Most don't.

Shopify Plus is worth the investment for stores doing over $1M/year in revenue that need checkout customization, multi-currency expansion stores, B2B wholesale, or advanced automation. Below $800K/year, the math rarely works — the features you gain don't offset the 7x price jump from Advanced Shopify, according to Shopify's own upgrade guidance and WebMedic's migration data.

Here's a framework we use with every brand considering the upgrade:

You probably need Shopify Plus if:

  • Revenue exceeds $1M/year and the 0.6% third-party transaction fee on Advanced is costing you more than the Plus price difference
  • You need checkout customization — delivery date pickers, custom fields, upsells in the checkout itself (not possible on any lower plan)
  • You're expanding internationally and need multiple storefronts with localized currencies, languages, and inventory
  • You sell B2B and DTC from the same platform — Plus has native B2B with custom price lists, net payment terms, and company accounts
  • Automation is critical — Shopify Flow on Plus handles complex workflows (fraud flagging, inventory alerts, customer tagging) without third-party apps

You probably don't need Shopify Plus if:

  • Revenue is under $800K/year — Advanced Shopify covers most needs at $399/month
  • Your checkout works fine as-is and you don't need customization beyond what Shopify's standard checkout offers
  • You operate a single store in one market with one currency
  • Your tech stack is simple (few integrations, standard fulfillment)

The worst reason to upgrade is "we're growing and it feels like the next step." Plus is a toolset, not a status symbol. If you can't name three specific features you need from Plus that you can't get on Advanced, stay where you are.

We wrote a detailed guide on planning your ecommerce budget that covers how to think about platform costs relative to revenue. And if you're evaluating Shopify in the Malaysian market, the pricing dynamics are slightly different because of Shopify Payments availability.

How Do Shopify Plus Transaction Fees Work?

Transaction fees are the cost most brands underestimate.

Shopify Plus charges 0.2% per transaction when using a third-party payment gateway, or credit card processing rates starting at 2.15% + 30¢ through Shopify Payments. For a store processing $3M/year, the difference between Advanced Shopify's 2.4% rate and Plus's 2.15% rate saves approximately $7,500 annually in processing fees alone, based on Shopify's published rate schedule.

If you use Shopify Payments:

  • Credit card rate: starts at 2.15% + 30¢ (negotiable at high volume)
  • No additional transaction fee
  • International cards: slightly higher rates apply

If you use a third-party gateway:

  • 0.2% transaction fee on top of whatever your gateway charges
  • Compare this to 0.6% on Advanced and 1.0% on regular Shopify
  • For a $5M/year store, the difference between 0.6% and 0.2% = $20,000/year saved

Currency conversion fees:

  • 1.5% on Shopify Payments for international transactions
  • This applies when a customer pays in a different currency than your store's default
  • For ASEAN stores selling cross-border (MYR store selling to SGD customers), this adds up

Here's the math for a store doing $200,000/month in revenue:

Fee type Advanced Shopify Shopify Plus Annual difference
Credit card rate 2.4% + 30¢ 2.15% + 30¢ ~$6,000 saved
3rd party gateway fee 0.6% 0.2% ~$9,600 saved
Total potential savings ~$15,600/year

Based on $2.4M annual revenue, Shopify published rates

At $200K/month in revenue, the transaction fee savings alone cover more than half the annual cost difference between Advanced and Plus.

What Features Does Shopify Plus Include That Lower Plans Don't?

The feature list is long. Most of it doesn't matter. A few things are worth every dollar.

Shopify Plus exclusively includes Checkout Extensibility (custom checkout UI and logic), Shopify Functions (backend checkout customization), up to 9 expansion stores at no extra cost, B2B wholesale, Launchpad for automated sales events, and 200 Shopify POS Pro locations. These features are not available on any lower Shopify plan at any price, per Shopify's official documentation.

The features that actually justify the upgrade:

Checkout Extensibility and Functions. This is the single biggest reason to upgrade. On standard Shopify, the checkout is locked. You can't add fields, move elements, or change logic. On Plus, you get full control through Checkout UI Extensions and Shopify Functions — custom discounts, payment method filtering, delivery customization, and post-purchase upsells all built into the native checkout.

Expansion stores. Up to 9 additional storefronts included in your Plus subscription. Each can have its own domain, currency, language, and inventory. For brands expanding across ASEAN — say a Malaysian store adding Singapore and Thailand — this saves $2,300+/month per additional storefront versus separate Plus subscriptions.

B2B on Shopify. Native wholesale channel with custom price lists, company accounts, net payment terms (Net 30, Net 60), and quantity rules. Before this existed, brands needed separate wholesale platforms like Faire or custom-built portals.

Shopify Flow automation. Complex conditional workflows: auto-tag customers by spend tier, flag high-risk orders, trigger restock notifications, segment email lists by behavior. Flow exists on Advanced Shopify too, but Plus merchants get more advanced triggers and actions.

Launchpad. Schedule and automate product launches, flash sales, and campaigns. Lock price changes, theme swaps, and inventory visibility to a specific time window. No midnight laptop sessions to hit "publish."

How Does Shopify Plus Compare to Magento and BigCommerce Enterprise?

Platform choice at the enterprise level comes down to total cost and control.

Shopify Plus costs $2,300–$12,000/month with hosting included, while Magento Commerce (Adobe Commerce) ranges from $22,000 to $125,000/year in licensing plus $1,000–$5,000/month in hosting and infrastructure. BigCommerce Enterprise starts at approximately $1,000/month but requires more custom development. Shopify Plus offers the lowest total cost of ownership for most DTC brands, per published vendor pricing and Gartner's 2025 Digital Commerce report.

Factor Shopify Plus Magento (Adobe Commerce) BigCommerce Enterprise
Platform fee $2,300+/month $22,000–$125,000/year ~$1,000+/month
Hosting Included Self-managed or cloud ($1K–$5K/mo) Included
PCI compliance Included Your responsibility Included
Time to launch 4–12 weeks 3–9 months 6–16 weeks
Developer availability High Shrinking Moderate
Checkout customization Checkout Extensibility Full control (open source) Limited
B2B capabilities Native Strong (via extensions) Native
Best for DTC brands, omnichannel Complex B2B, heavy customization Mid-market, headless

Sources: Shopify, Adobe Commerce, BigCommerce published pricing; Gartner Digital Commerce MQ 2025

Magento gives you more control — but you pay for it with hosting, security, patching, and developer costs. A Magento build that matches a Shopify Plus store's functionality typically costs 3–5x more in the first year.

BigCommerce Enterprise is the closest competitor on price, but its app ecosystem is smaller and checkout customization is more limited.

For DTC and omnichannel brands in ASEAN doing $1M–$50M in revenue, Shopify Plus wins on total cost of ownership almost every time. We've seen the comparison firsthand across dozens of migration projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Shopify Plus cost per month in 2026?

Shopify Plus costs a minimum of $2,300 per month on a 3-year contract, or 0.25% of monthly qualifying revenue — whichever amount is higher. A store generating $2 million per month in revenue would pay $5,000 per month in platform fees. Total operating costs including apps and development typically range from $4,500 to $12,000 per month.

Can you negotiate Shopify Plus pricing?

Shopify Plus pricing is negotiable on credit card processing rates and contract terms, especially for high-volume merchants processing over $5 million annually. The base platform fee of $2,300 per month is generally fixed, but Shopify may offer reduced rates on payment processing (below the standard 2.15% + 30 cents) for merchants committing to longer contracts or higher volume thresholds.

Is Shopify Plus worth it for small businesses?

Shopify Plus is not designed for small businesses and is rarely cost-effective below $800,000 in annual revenue. At that revenue level, Advanced Shopify at $399 per month provides most features a growing store needs. The upgrade becomes worthwhile when transaction fee savings, checkout customization, and expansion stores justify the 7x price increase from Advanced to Plus.

What is the difference between Shopify and Shopify Plus?

Shopify Plus differs from standard Shopify plans by offering checkout customization through Checkout Extensibility, up to 9 expansion stores, native B2B wholesale, Shopify Functions for backend logic, Launchpad for automated campaigns, and unlimited staff accounts. Standard Shopify plans lock the checkout, limit staff accounts, and do not support multi-store operations or B2B features.

Does Shopify Plus include hosting and SSL?

Shopify Plus includes unlimited hosting, SSL certificates, CDN delivery, and PCI DSS Level 1 compliance at no additional cost. This is a significant advantage over platforms like Magento and WooCommerce, where hosting alone costs $1,000 to $5,000 per month for enterprise-grade infrastructure, and PCI compliance requires separate auditing and certification.
